Walter John Fletcher
Lieutenant-Commander Walter John Fletcher, R.N. (24 June, 1883 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Fletcher was born in Hanover Square, London.
Fletcher was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1904.[1]
He was appointed to the battleship Mars for one year, commencing in July, 1903 when he was moved to the battleship Illustrious for 14 months.[2]
From November 1905, he was appointed to the Royal Navy Barracks in Chatham. In June of 1906, he went to H.M.S. Bedford, and in July over to H.M.S. Terrible. A longer, two year stint in the second class protected cruiser Astræa commenced in September, 1906. From September until October, 1908, Fletcher was appointed to the second class protected cruiser Charybdis.[2]
Fletcher was appointed Lieutenant & Commander of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 10 on 30 November, 1908.[3] He remained with her until January, 1911, when he was appointed to the destroyer Ribble until March when he was moved to the destroyer Ure, remaining in her for the balance of the year. It is not certain that he commanded these vessels.[2]
Fletcher was appointed in command of the destroyer Defender on 13 January, 1912.[4]
Fletcher was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1912.
On 15 February, 1915, his wife contacted the Admiralty privately to report her husband in a state of complete mental breakdown.
On 9 March, 1915, Fletcher was placed on the Retired List as unfit for service, due to insanity.
