Captain Walter Herman Gordon Fallowfield (27 April, 1888 – 6 December, 1954) was an officer in the Royal Navy who served in both World Wars.

Life & Career

Born in Ayrshire, Fallowfield was raised by a Mrs. Mackintosh.

Fallowfield was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1910.[1]

Fallowfield was appointed to Basilisk, part of the Malta Flotilla as first officer on 7 January, 1914. He was made her captain on 9 May, 1915 when Commander Henry Haire-Forster was invalided, and was credited with destroying U 32 on 8 May, 1918 in concert with H.M.S. Wallflower. Fallowfield was considered for a D.S.C. in light of this success, but this seemed to falter on procedural issues. Shortly after Basilisk paid off on 31 May, 1918, Fallowfield was appointed in command of the destroyer Marvel and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1918.[2]

Post-War

Fallowfield was appointed in command of the destroyer Veteran on 29 October, 1919.[3]

Fallowfield was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1924.[4]

Fallowfield was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1931.[5]

On 26 October, 1936, Fallowfield took over command as Captain-in-Charge, H.M. Naval Establishments at Ceylon, vice Sandford. His tenure here lasted two years. In mid February 1939 he was made captain of the heavy cruiser Cumberland.

World War II
