Commander Walter Clifton Slater (6 September, 1861 – c. 3 December, 1901) served in the Royal Navy.

He legally changed his name to Clifton Sclater in September, 1891.

Life & Career

Slater was granted leave to travel to France to study the language in 1880. Completing a course in Excellent in May 1881, he was appointed to Cygnet.

Slater was awarded the Beaufort Testimonial for 1881, receiving 2103 out of 2400 marks.[1]

Slater was specially promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 18 November, 1882 for services in Alexandria and in Egypt.[2]

Sir Fremantle mentioned Slater in despatches on 6 January, 1891 in recognition of his keen handling of field guns in operations against Vitu.[3]

Slater, now known by the name Clifton Sclater, was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1896.[4]

Sclater was appointed to command the new sloop Condor on 1 November, 1900 and was lost when she foundered in the Pacific, having complained that the ship had poor stability.[5][6][7]
