Commander (retired) Vivian Russell Salvin Bowlby (17 September, 1895 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born the son of Robert R. Bowlby, Bowlby passed out of the Training Establishment on 15 May, 1913 and was appointed to Victory for the Australia.

Great War

On 1 August, 1915, Bowlby was appointed to Birkenhead. He applied for submarines on 29 December, 1915 but remained in Birkenhead until 15 April, 1916 when he was sent to Dolphin for duty with submarines. He was next directed to Arrogant for more of the same, on 5 June, 1916. Bowlby served in C 35 from October 1916, and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 March, 1917 before moving to E 1 on 7 August, 1917. On 15 January, 1918 he was appointed to the K 16. In July, 1918, Bowlby received his first command appointment in the submarine F 1.[1]

Post-War

Bowlby was temporarily appointed in command of the German submarine U 141 on 31 December, 1918 until he was appointed to Vulcan for submarines on 13 February, 1919. On 23 September, 1919, he commenced a string of appointments to surface ships: Donovan for one month and then the old battleship Cæsar on 22 November, 1919 and Iron Duke on 28 January, 1920. He obtained a 2nd Class certificate in submarines in January, 1920.[2]

After obtaining passage to Britain in the Asphodel, Bowlby attended the Periscope School at Vulcan and was then appointed in command of the nine "R" class submarines of the Group "K" Reserve at Portsmouth on 8 July, 1920: R 1, R 2, R 3, R 7, R 8, R 9, R 10, R 11 and R 12.[3]

Bowlby was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 March, 1925. He reverted to General Service when he completed his last submarine command appointment in December, 1927 when he left L 18 to begin appointments to the carriers Courageous in February, 1928 and Ark Royal from December, 1930. [4]

Bowlby was placed on the Retired List on his own request on 2 April, 1931 and subsequently promoted to the rank of Commander on 17 September, 1935.[5]

World War II

Bowlby was called up and assigned to take an anti-submarine course. On 9 October, 1939, he was appointed in charge of No. 24 A/S Trawler Group vice Brind. Superseded there on 15 December, Bowlby went to perform duty on the staff of Commander-in-Chief, Rosyth, vice Blomfield.

In 1942, he applied for his relief at Rosyth. Some subsequent appointments appear to be cancelled and some hospitalisations are noted, but it is unclear how he spent his time to the end of the war. He was finally reverted to the Retired List on 16 November, 1945.[6]
