Commander Vincent Paul Freeman, R.N., Retired (19 July, 1889 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Falmouth, the son of J. A. Freeman, Esq...
Freeman was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1912.
In October 1913 while appointed to Tyne of the Eighth Destroyer Flotilla, Freeman lost a copy of Signalling Instructions. This earned him the severe displeasure of Their Lordships.[1]
Freeman was first officer in the destroyer Pincher from 28 October 1913 to 1 October, 1916. On 26 February, 1916 he was tried by Court Martial for being negligent in performing his duty as officer of the watch in Pincher. The charge was proved and resulted in a reprimand for Freeman.[2]
Later in the war, he was in Blenheim, Lord Nelson and Cardiff. He left Cardiff for an appointment in the battlecruiser Tiger at the end of January, 1919.[3]
In March 1920, Freeman was admitted to Haslar Hospital to be treated for influenza. He regained fitness on 21 April and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1920.[4]
Freeman was considered to blame for the total loss of C.M.B. 82c while under the tow of Trusty on 22 February 1923.[5]
From late 1926 through late 1929 he commanded a group of Emergency Destroyers, being himself on the books of Douglas and Carysfort while so doing.[6]
Freeman was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Commander on 19 July, 1932.
World War II
Mobilised on 28 September 1938, his service will be hard to outline due to a nearly illegible service record, though he staretd out as Naval Officer in Command, Yarmouth.
He was re-appointed to provide executive duties at Londonderry Base on 9 December, 1940.
