Captain (retired) Victor Cyril Dorman-Smith (24 October, 1896 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Dorman-Smith was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1918.[1]

He served in C 19 from 11 December 1916, and then in G 14 from 27 July, 1917 through 30 April, 1918 when he moved to G 10. He served in that boat through the end of the conflict.[2]

Post-War

On 31 January, 1919, Dorman-Smith was appointed to G 5. On 1 April, 1920, he moved to H 42.[3]

On 5 October, 1920, Dorman-Smith was appointed in command of the nine "E" class boats of Group "H" in reserve at Rosyth: E 23, E 27, E 31, E 32, E 35, E 38, E 39, E 40 and E 41.[4]

Dorman-Smith was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 January, 1926.[5]

Dorman-Smith was appointed in command of the submarine Olympus upon her commissioning in 1930. He was superseded in this command on September, 1930 and was then dispatched to serve on a Naval Advisory Staff on Chile for two years.[6]

Dorman-Smith was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1931.[7]

He was appointed in command of the submarine Thames in 1933, vice Barry and was superseded in 1935.[8]

World War II

Dorman-Smith was promoted to the rank of Captain on 24 October, 1941 while serving on the Staff of the Flag Officer Commanding, Dover as Staff Officer (O) and A/S duties, vice Walker.[9]

He was appointed for duty with Rear Admiral Landing Craft and Bases in May, 1942 to serve with the rank of Commander. He would serve through to the end of the war in a variety of administrative staff appointments, being finally retired on 17 October, 1945.[10]
