Commander Vaughan Alexander Edward Hanning-Lee, D.S.O., O.B.E., Royal Navy (1 October, 1878 – 27 May, 1949) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Hanning-Lee was born in Winchester, son of Lieutenant-Commander Hanning-Lee of 7 Devonshire Place in London.[1]

Hanning-Lee was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in December, 1900.[2]

Hanning-Lee was appointed in command of the destroyer Sylvia on 1 August, 1905.[3]

He was appointed in command of the destroyer Boxer on 10 July, 1907.[4]

Hanning-Lee was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander in December, 1908.[5]

After commanding several of the latest destroyers, Hanning-Lee was appointed to Triumph as first officer on 21 September, 1912. A period on Half Pay unemployment followed almost immediately before he was appointed to Juno as first officer on 20 January, 1913. On 27 January, 1914, he moved to St. George as first and gunnery officer.[6]

Great War

Hanning-Lee was still first and gunnery officer in St. George when the war began. On 29 January, 1915, he was appointed her acting Commander. He was superseded in this role on 5 November. On 6 November, he was sent to Salonika to act as an assistant to Captain Hodges. On 2 August, 1916 he was appointed in command of the gunboat Ladybird.[7]

He married Blanche Mary Fowler on 26 January, 1917.[8]

Hanning-Lee was promoted to the rank of Commander and placed on the Retired List at his own request on 26 April, 1920.[9]

He was admitted to the Royal Naval Hospital, Haslar for auricular fibrillation on 12 April, 1944. This condition required a number of hospital visits through the year.

He died on 27 May, 1949 of an embolism, auricular fibrillation and arterio sclerosis.[10]
