U.S.S. Tacoma was one of six Denver Class protected cruisers completed for the U.S. Navy.

Union Iron Works launched Tacoma on 2 June, 1903. She commissioned on 30 January, 1904 with Commander Reginald Fairfax Nicholson in command.
