U.S.S. S-4 was one of fifty-one "S" Class submarines completed for the U.S. Navy.

Service

S-4 was commissioned on 19 November, 1919 with Lieutenant Commander Percy K. Robottom in command.

As she was surfacing off the coast of Provincetown, S-4 was rammed and sunk by Paulding on 17 December 1927. Though some men survived the initial sinking and exchanged tapped messages with would-be rescuers from the seabed, sea conditions did not allow any successful rescue. Forty men died.

In 1928, she was raised and re-commissioned.
