Construction
Purchased by the U.S. Navy at San Francisco on 30 June, 1898, roughly three weeks after her commissioning![7]
Service
Commissioned on 8 June, 1898 with Commander Charles Belknap in command but, as previously noted, not actually purchased until 30 June![8] To confuse matters further, Belknap is listed elsewhere as having been assigned to the Nero beginning of 15 June![9]
