U.S.S. Bonita was one of five Octopus (or "C") class submarines completed for the U.S. Navy. She commissioned on 23 November 1909, Lieutenant Frederick V. McNair, Jr. in command.

On 17 November, 1911, Bonita was redesignated C-4.
