History

The Training Squadron commissioned at Portsmouth and Chatham on 21 September, 1885.[1] Captain Robert O'B. FitzRoy was appointed Commodore, Second Class in command on 30 September, and assumed command on 12 October, flying his broad pendant in Active.[2]

On 30 October, 1899, the masted Training Squadron was paid off. The following day the crews turned over to first-class cruisers, the formation then becoming the Cruiser Squadron.
