Thomas Frederick Parker Calvert
Rear-Admiral Thomas Frederick Parker Calvert, C.B., C.V.O., D.S.O., R.N. (7 May, 1883 – 1 July, 1938) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Calvert was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 May, 1905.[1]
Calvert was appointed in command of the submarine D 5 on 15 October, 1912.[2]
Calvert was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 May, 1913.[3]
On 10 March, 1914, Calvert was appointed to Iron Duke.
Great War
Calvert was re-appointed in Iron Duke on 31 December, 1914, being additionally tasked with assuming the first lieutenant's duties. He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1916 and superseded on 18 August, 1916.[4]
He returned to submarine command, being appointed to the still-completing K 11 on 18 September, 1916. Upon her commissioning, he took command until being superseded on 9 September, 1918 to undertake an appointment in Dolphin "for submarines".[5]
Post-war
Calvert was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1922.[6]
In September, 1926, Calvert was appointed in command of the cruiser Frobisher.
On 16 May, 1932, he was appointed in command of the battlecruiser Renown. On 21 September, 1932, Renown was firing her H.A. guns and a projectile landed in North Berwick. Calvert was found "[s]eriously to blame for not taking steps to see that firing practice was carried out in a safe manner." He was superseded in Renown on 14 August, 1933 and appointed additional to H.M.S. Nelson as Chief of Staff to Rear Admiral Kelly, subsequently to Admiral Boyle, with the rank of Commodore, First Class.[7]
Calvert was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 19 December, 1934 and was re-appointed as Chief of Staff. He was hospitalised at Haslar with a carbuncle on his neck in 1935, and, after seven months work inside the Admiralty, he was appointed as Rear Admiral Commanding, Second Cruiser Squadron, vice Vice-Admiral Meyrick on 14 December, 1936.
His health was apparently cause for early termination of his command of 2 C.S. on 13 June, 1938, as on 18 May he underwent surgery at Portland Hospital for an intestinal obstruction, being placed on the dangerous list for a week. He improved enough to be transferred to King's College Hospital in London on 19 June, but he was not to recover. He died on 1 July, 1938.[8]
