Commander (retired) Spencer Francis Russell, O.B.E., R.N. (28 December, 1884 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born on Malta the son of a Colonel, Russell ranked forty-third among 62 successful candidates in examinations for entry to the Britannia intake term of September 1899, with 2220 marks.[1]

Russell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1906.[2]

Russell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1914.

Russell commanded the destroyer Munster at the Battle of Jutland.[3]

Russell was appointed in command of the destroyer Minion on 12 May, 1918.[4]

Russell's command of Minion ended when he was appointed to Egmont, additional, to provide Special Service on the Danube on 26 March, 1919.

Russell was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Commander on 7 April, 1927.
