Captain Somerville Peregrine Brownlow Russell, R.N., Retired (10 July, 1883 – 1946) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Russell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1905.[1]

Russell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 April, 1913.

Great War

Russell was appointed in command of the destroyer Otter on the 7 November, 1914.[2]

Russell was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1917. In July 1918, Captain Dutton evaluated him as a "somewhat mediocre officer of little personality."[3]

He was appointed in command of the destroyer Tintagel on 24 October, 1918.[4]

Post-War

In February of 1919, Captain Godfrey said he was a "good divisional commander" with other good qualities, but Captain Rowley-Conwy said that he had "not a very high opinion of [Russell]", because "Tintagel was not entirely to my liking."[5] On 29 April, 1919, Russell was appointed in command of the destroyer Venomous.[6]

On 8 January, 1922, Russell was appointed to Hecla, additional, to take command of a group of destroyers in reserve.[7]

Russell was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 1 January, 1923 and promoted to the rank of Captain on the Retired List upon reaching 45 years of age on 10 July, 1928.[8]
