Lieutenant Roland Aubin Vavasor Durell, R.N. (15 December, 1887 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of Reverend J. V. Durrell was born in Fulbown.
Durell delivered such poor results in the Junior Officers Afloat exam in November, 1905 that a report was called for. On 2 May 1906, Captain Shortland responded, "it is quite inexplicable why he did so badly because he always was regarded as one of the most promising [illeg] in all respects & was a most accurate & attentive assistant navigator."
Durell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 Serptember, 1908.
Durell was blamed for damaging the periscope and fouling the number 2 buoy in Dundee Harbour while in command of C 22.
In January, 1912, Captain Johnson recorded "not good S/M offr. Failed to pay mess bills and prevaricated about these matters."
Durell resigned his commission on 15 May, 1912, having been appointed to Indefatigable on 9 January.
