Commander Robert Tatton Bower, (9 June, 1894 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Major R. L. Bower, C.M.G., formerly of the 60th Rifles.[1]

Bower served in the light cruiser Inconstant of the First Light Cruiser Squadron on 30 November, 1914, seeing action in the ship at the Battle of Jutland.[2]

Bower was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 July, 1916. This was later adjusted to 15 April.[3]

On 11 September 1916, Bower was appointed to H.M.S. Dolphin for instruction in submarines. He started serving in submarines from November 1916, seeing service in C 14 and E 40. In December 1917, a bout of gastritis landed him in Royal Naval Hospital, Hull. He would not regain fitness until September, 1918 and would busy himself in shore duties as Flag Lt. to Admiral Colville in Portsmouth.[4]

Bower was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 April, 1924.[5]

Bower was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 1 April, 1931 and was promoted to the rank of Commander on 9 June, 1934.[6]

World War II

Mobilised in 1938, he served as Naval Liaison Officer in Coastal Command Headquarters War Room from 3 September 1939 to 10 July, 1940.

After helping oversee the completion of the Flower-class corvette Fleur de Lys and spending a few days in command of the completed vessel, he was reverted to the Retired List on 1 November, 1940.[7]
