Vice-Admiral (retired) Robert Sidney Rolleston, R.N. (15 September, 1849 – 16 March, 1926) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Rolleston was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 23 September, 1873.[1]

Rolleston was appointed in command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 5 on 16 June, 1884, for manoeuvres.[2]

On 13 November 1885, he was appointed in command of Seaflower. On 23 May 1887, she grounded on a shoal, but no blame was attached to Rolleston.[3]

Rolleston was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1888. He was superseded in command of Seaflower on 1 September, 1888[4]

Rolleston was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1895.[5]

In late 1900, the Colonial Office relayed its thanks for Rolleston having marked the position of Point Playa and demarcated the boundary of British Guiana.[6]

On 25 June, 1901, Rolleston was appointed in command of Nile. On 25 October 1901, she collided with Trafalgar and Rolleston was told that the Admiralty observed "with surprise and regret that he did not consider his immediate attendance on deck necessary during the performance of a Fleet Evolution, especially in view of the fact that the movement in question was ordered for the purpose of taking the squadron into narrow waters."[7]

Rolleston was appointed in command of the battleship Royal Oak in February, 1903.

Retired due to age on 15 September 1904.

Rolleston was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 20 February, 1906 and then to Vice-Admiral on 22 July, 1920.[8]
