Commander (retired) Richard Isacke Clutterbuck, (2 November, 1896 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of E. Clutterbuck, Esq., solicitor, was a Special Entry to the Royal Navy in September 1915. He passed out of the Training Establishment on 1 APril 1916 and was appointed to the battleship Ajax, in which he served through March 1918, seeing action at the Battle of Jutland where his ship was part of the Second Battle Squadron.[1]

In March 1918 he was sent briefly to T.B. 8 before being sent to H.M.S. Vernon for a course in Torpedo Control on 1 April 1918. He emerged from this and was appointed to the destroyer Vidette on 13 April.

Clutterbuck was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1919. On 24 November, he was appointed in command of a Motor Launch, possibly Number 480. In the 1920s, he would serve in a variety of destroyers.[2]

Clutterbuck was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 September, 1927.[3]

He commanded the trawler H.M.S. Barnet (which I cannot fully identify) from 3 July 1934, taking the ship to Hong Kong under the escort of H.M.S. Grimsby. In 1936, he was found by a Court of Enquiry to have failed to follow proper accounting procedures at Tamar in the period 1933-1935.[4]

Clutterbuck was placed on the Retired List on account of age at the rank of Commander on 2 November, 1941.[5]
