Admiral SIR Reginald Friend Hannam Henderson, G.C.B., Royal Navy (20 November, 1846 – 12 July, 1932) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Reginald Friend Hannam Henderson was born at Worth, near Sandwich, on 20 November, 1846. He was the second of four brothers born to John Henderson, J.P., and Laura, daughter of Henry Pett Hannam. His elder brother was William Hannam Henderson (later an Admiral and knighted), Frank Hannam Henderson (later Vice-Admiral on the Retired List), and John Henderson, who retired as a Commander.

Henderson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with seniority of 10 March, 1869, confirming the the commission granted him by Vice-Admiral Sir George Mundy, Commander-in-Chief on the North American and West Indian Station, in the vacancy caused by the death of Lieutenant Huntley of the Cherub.[1]

Henderson was promoted to the rank of Commander on 17 June, 1881.[2]

Henderson was promoted to the rank of Captain on 21 June, 1887.[3]

He was appointed in command of H.M.S. Rover on 1 November, 1888.[4]

On the occasion of the Queen's birthday, Henderson was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 25 May, 1892.[5]

He was appointed in command of the battleship Mars on 8 June, 1897.[6] On 15 January, 1898, he was appointed to the Asia as Captain of Portsmouth Dockyard Reserve.[7]

Henderson was appointed Captain Superintendent of Sheerness Dockyard on 28 June, 1899.[8]

Henderson was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 15 June, 1901, vice Douglas.[9]

Henderson succeeded Rear-Admiral Pelham Aldrich as Admiral Superintendent of Portsmouth Dockyard on 1 September, 1902.[10]

Henderson was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 22 July, 1905, vice Fanshawe.[11]

On the occasion of the King's birthday he was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Second Class, or Knight Commander, in the Military Division of the Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) on 28 June, 1907.[12]

He was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 2 December, 1908, vice Noel.[13]

In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, he was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 1 January, 1910.[14]

On the occasion of King George V's birthday he was appointed an Ordinary Member of the First Class, or Knight Grand Cross, in the Military Division of the Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) on 22 June, 1914.[15]

Lady Henderson died at Southbourne on 3 May, 1947, aged eighty-six.[16]
