Lieutenant Randolph Divett, (17 May, 1883 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Southport, the son of the secretary of the Royal London Yacht Club, 2 Savile Row London. It is amusing to note that The Beatles would perform their famous rooftop concert next door at 3 Savile Row in 1969.
Divett was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with seniority of 15 August, 1904.
In 1906, he was sent to Haslar and diagnosed with "derangement."
An appointment in command of Opossum dated 2 June 1908[1] was cancelled.[2]
While appointed in command of the Havock, Divett was reported absent without leave from 21 November, 1908. In January 1909 he was Court Martialed. He admitted the charge, and explained that he was suffering from influenza and was worried over private affairs. He was dismissed the ship and penalized a year's seniority.[3]
He commanded three destroyers in a six-month period in the second half of 1908 before being appointed for one year's service in the first class protected cruiser Terrible. On 10 August, 1910 he was appointed to Blenheim to be first officer in the Tribal Class destroyer Maori. This lasted until he committed some grave impropriety in July 1911. On 31 July 1911, Divett was tried by Court Martial on charges of fraudulent conversion of money and forgery. He was dismissed the service in disgrace. It would be interesting to learn if Randolph ever held station at the Yacht Club.
