Vice-Admiral Ralph Eliot, C.B.E., Royal Navy, (13 January, 1881 – 20 December, 1958) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Eliot gained an impressive twelve months' time on passing out of Britannia.[1]

Eliot was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 January, 1902.[2]

On 30 May 1905 he was appointed to Jupiter as gunnery officer. On 11 January, 1908 he was ordered from Jupiter to undertake gunnery duties at Royal Naval Barracks, Portsmouth. He left Portsmouth when he received an appointment as first and gunnery officer in Natal on 8 January, 1910. In early 1911, seaman George Smith was killed in an accident and Elliot incurred severe displeasure for having failed to guard against the turrets being worked in an irregular fashion. Elliot left Natal when on 8 January, 1913, he was appointed to Orion as first and gunnery officer. In this appointment, Eliot was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1913.[3]

On 3 January, 1914, Elliot was appointed to Albemarle. On 22 June, he was appointed to King George V, additional, as Flag Commander to Vice Admiral, Third Battle Squadron E. E. Bradford. He followed Bradford throughout his tenure as V/A 3 B.S., going to Hindustan on 15 May, 1915 thenKing Edward VII on 9 August, 1915 and then Britannia on 30 January, 1916. Elliot went from Britannia to War Staff work on 19 July, 1916 when Bradford struck his flag.[4]

Elliot was appointed executive officer in Emperor of India on 2 August, 1916 and stayed until he was superseded upon his promotion to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1918. He was presently hospitalised at Granton in mid July for rheumatoid arthritis, which did not abate until November. On 15 November, he went to the Admiralty to work on the Personnel Committee.[5]

Post-War

Eliot was appointed in command of H.M.S. Hercules on 15 May, 1920.[6]

Elliot was was appointed in command of the light cruiser Cleopatra when she re-commissioned on 3 January, 1921.

Eliot was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 9 October, 1929, vice Oliver Backhouse. He was placed on the retired List on 10 October.[7][8]

Elliot was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral (retired) on 8 May, 1935.[9]

World War II

On 16 September 1939 Elliot was appointed to Eaglet II as Commodore, Second Class R.N.R. for Convoys.

On 11 June 1942 Elliot was appointed Naval officer in Charge, Lamlash vice Hutchings, servign int eh rank of Captain. His work here continued until being dispersed on 5 September 1945. He reverted to the Retired List on 1 November, 1945.[10]
