Rear-Admiral (retired) Rafe Grenville Rowley-Conwy (11 September, 1875 – 4 April, 1951) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born Rafe Grenville Rowley Conwy, the son of Captain C. R. Conwy, J.P.. Conwy's first regular appointment was to the second class battleship Anson on 29 August, 1890. Though no explicit mention of an issue is recorded, Conwy's conduct was to be reported on in six month's time, which suggests disciplinary problems. On 1 March, 1891, he was reported to be diligent and attentive on deck but lazy at school. This appears to have been good enough to smooth over whatever had happened. Service in Cleopatra, Charybdis and Hood followed.[1]

Conwy was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 22 June, 1897. On 22 October, 1898 he was invalided from the Scout in the Mediterranean. On 25 March, 1899, he altered his name by hyphenating to become Rafe Grenville Rowley-Conwy.[2]

Rowley-Conwy was promoted to the rank of Commander on 22 June, 1911 and superseded in command of Skipjack on 30 June. On 31 August 1911, he was appointed in command of the "C" Class destroyer Violet.[3]

On 1 May 1912, Rowley-Conwy was placed in command of the destroyer Martin.[4]

On 12 May, 1914, Rowley-Conwy was appointed in command of the Laforey Class destroyer Lark.[5]

Great War

Rowley-Conwy commanded Lark until being appointed to the "M" Class destroyer Mentor on 27 November, 1914, to take command upon her commissioning.

Rowley-Conwy was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1916.[6]

He was appointed in command of the flotilla leader Parker in November, 1917.[7]

Post-War

In May, 1921, Rowley-Conwy was appointed in command of the light cruiser Curacoa.

Rowley-Conwy was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 9 June, 1922.[8]

Rowley-Conwy was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on the Retired List on 12 February, 1928.[9]
