Commander Philip Sidney Ronayne Conron, Royal Navy, Retired (20 May, 1878 – 18 February, 1922) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Conron was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1900.[1]

He was appointed to the new sloop Shearwater on 24 September, 1901 as Lieutenant (N) and was serving in this capacity when she ran aground in the Strait of Magellan on 19 January, 1902. A Court of Enquiry found no blame attributable, but the Admiralty disagreed with this conclusion and found Conron's navigation skills at fault and cautioned him to be more careful in future. However, after being appointed in command of the destroyer Bullfinch on 28 May, 1906, he would receive a similar admonishment over damage sustained by Bullfinch in June, 1907. Conron would be superseded in command of Bullfinch on 9 August, 1907 after an unsatisfactory inspection of that ship by Rear Admiral Montgomerie concluded he was "[n]ot suited to command a T.B.D.."[2]

Conron was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1908.[3]

An appointment as first officer in Duke of Edinburgh that started on 5 October, 1912 ended with an abrupt dismissal on 5 May, 1915 when Barrow was subjected to Their Lordships' severe displeasure for excessive consumption of wine. He was informed that further reports of this nature would entail serious consequences. He returned to England and started a 33 month appointment in Endymion, being refused a promotion in 1917. He left Endymion when she paid off in March, 1918 and was appointed to the new patrol boat PC 71, to take command when she was commissioned.[4]

Post-War

Conron was married on 18 December, 1918, four months after being appointed to Lerwick Base. His last service evaluation from this time indicates that although he obtains "good results from men under his charge", his habits were "not temp[erate]".[5]

Conron was placed on the Retired List at his own request with a step in rank to Commander on 31 July, 1919.[6]
