Captain (retired) Philip James Stopford, R.N. (14 January, 1872 – 22 April, 1952) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

On 21 July, 1892, Stopford was loaned to command the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 66 for manoeuvres.[1]

Stopford was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 14 May, 1893.[2]

Stopford was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1905.[3]

Stopford was appointed in command of the third class protected cruiser Pyramus on 30 November, 1912.[4]

Stopford suffered some health challenges and was deemed fit for shore service only. Eleven months in command of the training establishment Impregnable ended in January, 1917 after a Court of Enquiry determined that friction between Stopford and his executive office were attributable to his own "want of tact." He was to be superseded by a Captain.[5]

Stopford was appointed to Dreel Castle, additional, as a Shipping Intelligence Officer on 12 January, 1917 and would serve here until 1 June, 1919, being granted the acting rank of Captain on 13 September, 1917.[6]

On 1 June, 1919, he received an appointment to serve in the Cowes Harbour Division of the Coastguard. He remained active in this posting until he was placed on the Retired List on account of age at the rank of Captain (retired) on 14 January, 1922.[7]
