Commander (retired) Percy John Helyar, D.S.O., R.N. (11 January, 1882 – 8 May, 1920) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Lansdowne, Somerset.

Helyar was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 39 June, 1903.

Helyar was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 39 June, 1911.

Helyar retired at his own request on 1 April, 1912, having been recently refused when requesting to go on half-pay.

Helyar was appointed in command of the destroyer Albacore on 26 October, 1914.[1]

On 20 April, 1916, Helyar was reprimanded after a Court Martial for stranding Cossack. It was not before leaving command in February, 1917 that he received an evaluation that read, "now considered an able & reliable offr. & accident mentioned due to tempry aberation."

In 1918, Tormentor collided with Walker, and Helyar was told to be more careful in future.

Helyar reverted to the Retired List on 10 February, 1919 and was promoted to the rank of Commander (retired) in recognition of services rendered during the war, dated 11 November, 1918.
