Captain Percival Henry Warleigh, C.B.E., J.P., Royal Navy (2 April, 1873 – 20 October, 1933) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Early Life & Career

Warleigh was confirmed in the rank of Sub-Lieutenant dated 14 December, 1892.[1]

Warleigh was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1905.[2]

Warleigh was appointed as Naval Secretary of the Ordnance Board on 1 January, 1908.[3]

On 15 February, 1910, Warleigh was appointed to the third class protected cruiser Prometheus, then serving on the Australian Station.

In 1911, Warleigh was thanked as one of three officers who invented a "Single Ship Battle & Fire Control Teacher]]. His service record contains a note from Vice Admiral Poore that Warleigh possessed "considerable inventive talent" and demonstrated zeal in "carrying out designs for improvement of heavy gun shooting". Warleigh's appointment in Prometheus ended 15 February, 1912. Later that year, he attended a Signals and a War Course. On 4 January, 1913, he was appointed to Ocean, but this lasted only until the end of the month.[4]

On 31 December, 1913, Warleigh was promoted to the rank of Captain.[5]

Captain

Warleigh was admitted to Haslar Hospital for three weeks in mid-1914 for treatment of hemorrhoids. Immediately upon recovery, he was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Minerva for the Test Mobilisation and then for regular service. The cruiser started serving in the Eleventh Cruiser Squadron and then moved to the Fifth Cruiser Squadron in September. She went to Egypt and then became part of the Gallipoli operations.[6]

Warleigh was awarded 300 pounds sterling and patent C.P. 2903 of 10.6.15 for the "invention of a spotting table".[7]

On 5-6 July, 1915 he was sent from Mudros by the transport ship Monitor to Malta Hospital, with his "health completely broken down." He was then sent to England just as he received strong recommendations from Vice Admiral de Robeck. He was not found fit until 7 September, on which date Warleigh was appointed in command of the battleship Magnificent.

He was appointed of the first class protected cruiser Crescent on 6 March, 1916, remaining with her beyond the end of the war, including a designation of Flag Captain to Commander-in-Chief, Rosyth from 31 March.[8]

On 20 November, 1916, he was admitted to hospital with influenza. He was found fit on 9 December.[9]

He was mentioned in despatches for his "good services in the operations in the Gulf of Akaba at the end of 1914 and beginning of 1915," gazetted 39 November, 1917.[10]

In 1918, Warleigh was considered to blame for the escape of prisoners from Crescent.[11]

On 27 June, 1919, he was appointed a Commander of the Military Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) for "valuable services as Flag Captain and Captain of the Port Depôt Ship, Rosyth."[12] In August he assumed command of the first class protected cruiser Grafton.

Warleigh was placed on the Retired List at his own request, dated 24 August, 1922.[13]

He was appointed to serve for three years as Nautical Assessor Class III (Home Office) on 31 December, 1928, but on 19 June, 1929 he had to resign for reasons of ill health.[14]

Warleigh died on 20 October, 1933 at Sherborne, Dorset, leaving a widow, Marion.[15]
