Admiral Pelham Aldrich, C.V.O., Royal Navy (8 December, 1844 – 12 November, 1930) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Early Life & Career

Aldrich was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 11 September, 1866.[1]

Aldrich was promoted to the rank of Commander for arctic services (in the scurvy-wracked H.M.S. Alert) on 3 November, 1876.[2]

He was promoted to Captain on 29 June, 1883.[2]

Aldrich was appointed in command of the first-class protected cruiser Hawke on 16 May, 1893.[3]

Aldrich was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral dated 21 December, 1898, vice Drummond.[4]

On 6 August, 1899, the First Lord of the Admiralty, George J. Goschen, wrote to the First Naval Lord, Sir Frederick W. Richards, "I omitted to mention when I saw you on Friday that I was offering Portsmouth Dockyard to Aldrich, and Chatham to Holland, both from all that I have heard admirable men …"[5]

He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral dated 12 August, 1903, vice Rawson.[6]

Aldrich was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 1 March, 1907.[7] In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, he was placed on the Retired List, at his own request, on 22 March, 1908.[8]
