Order in Council of 8 March, 1771

The Order in Council of 8 March, 1771 was a piece of British legislation regulating promotion in the Royal Navy.

Order in Council

Whereas there was this Day read at the board a Report from a Committee of the Lords of His Majesty's most Honble Privy Council in the words following viz:

Memdum — Here the Committee Report on the Memorial of the Admiralty for altering the present Establishment with respect to the making Captains (who shall happen to be set aside by the Promotion of Junior Officers to Flags) Rear Admirals in general Terms, to be inserted at length, as vide entered page 94.

His Majesty taking the said Report into Consideration was pleased, with the Advice of His Privy Council, to approve thereby, and to order as it is hereby ordered, that for the future such Captains of the Navy as may happen to be set aside by the promotion of Junior Captains to the Rank of Admirals shall not have any Claim or Title to the Commission of Rear Admiral in general Terms, or the Pension Established by His late Majesty's said Order in Council of the 3rd of June 1747, unless such Captains shall have served with the approbation of the Board of Admiralty in any War in which His Majesty or his Successors shall have been engaged immediately preceding their being set aside as aforementioned. And the said Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty are to take care that His Majesty's Pleasure hereby signified be duly complied with.
