Admiral Norman Craig Palmer, C.V.O., Royal Navy, Retired (20 August, 1866 – 12 January, 1926) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

For "special service in effecting the capture of a Slave Dhow on the East Coast of Africa", Palmer was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 June, 1888.[1]

Palmer was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1899.[2]

Palmer served as Superintendent of Gymnasia at Portsmouth from February 1902 to November 1904,[3] being promoted to the rank of Captain on 1 January, 1904.[4] The Palmer Trophy, the Royal Navy's oldest award for team-based fencing and bayonet fighting, is named for him.

In May 1905, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Highflyer.

Directly thereafter, assumed command of the first class protected cruiser Royal Arthur in July 1906, remaining with her about one year.

Palmer was appointed captain of Aboukir on 9 March, 1909.[5]

On the occasion of the visit of the King to Malta Palmer was appointed a Member of the Fourth Class of the Royal Victorian Order (M.V.O.) on 24 April, 1909.[6]

Palmer was appointed a Naval Aide-Camp to King George V dated 4 June, 1913, vice Pakenham.[7] He was appointed a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (C.V.O.) on 13 October.[8] He was appointed in command of Conqueror on 16 December.[9]

Great War

Palmer was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 18 December, 1914, vice Eyres.[10]

Palmer was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 1 August, 1919.[11] He was placed on the Retired List on 2 August.[12]

He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 31 July, 1924.[13]
