Nigel Kenneth Walter Barttelot
Lieutenant-Commander Nigel Kenneth Walter Barttelot (9 April, 1883 – 28 August, 1914) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Coates, the son of Sir W. G. Barttelot, Bart., Nigel underwent examinations for several days commencing on 20 July, 1897 and gained entrance to the Britannia term of August, 1897, his 1193 marks placing him forty-seventh in merit among the sixty-three candidates accepted as naval cadets.[1] He gained four months' time on passing out of Britannia in mid-January, 1899.
Barttelot was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1904.[2]
Barttelot was appointed in command of Ardent for a month in mid-1906 and was able to escape blame in a collision with T.B. 84, as he seemed to do all he could to avoid the collision and handled his T.B.D. well in the aftermath. He moved on to serve for fourteen months in H.M.S. Dreadnought.
Barttelot was appointed in command of the destroyer Tartar on 4 January, 1912.[3]
Barttelot was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 September, 1912. He lost a torpedo on 4 November 1913 and was blamed for having failed to return the weapon for overhaul when it was known to be defective.
He was appointed in command of the destroyer Liberty of the Fourth Destroyer Flotilla on 7 March, 1914.[4] He died in her in the Battle of Helgoland Bight on 28 August, 1914.[5]
