Two New Orleans class protected cruisers were purchased by the U.S. Navy in 1898 in preparation for the Spanish-American War.

Construction

Ordered by Brazil from Armstrong, Mitchell, & Co., but

purchased by the United States as reinforcements during the crisis leading to the Spanish-American War. A third

ship, Barroso, remained in Brazilian hands.[1]
