Captain Mervyn Hugh Cobbe, R.N. (7 April, 1873 – 27 May, 1915) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Cobbe entered Britannia in January, 1886 after placing fifth in order of merit of the forty candidates for naval cadetship that were accepted for acceptance following a round of examinations in late November, 1885.[1]

Cobbe gained eleven months' time on passing out of Britannia. He was appointed to join Agincourt of the Channel Squadron on 10 January, 1888. On 1 March, he was appointed to the armoured cruiser Imperieuse of the China Station.[2]

Cobbe was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in October 1893.[3]

Cobbe was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1904.[4]

Cobbe was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1911.[5]

Cobbe was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Naiad on 11 February, 1914.[6]

The April 1915 Navy List and his own service record indicates that Cobbe was to appointed to Princess Margaret, additional, as Captain in Charge of Minelayers on 9 March, 1915, but he was aboard her ill-fated sister minelayer Princess Irene when she exploded and sank near Sheerness when being loaded with mines. We have indicated that he was in command of the ship, as the next-highest ranking officer aboard, Thomas Hector Molesworth Maurice, is only indicated as having been recently appointed to the ship, but not expressly in command.[7][8]
