Captain (retired) Lewis Knox Bell, (27 May, 1855 – 12 January, 1909) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Bell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 25 July, 1877.

Bell was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1892.

11 January 1897 appointed in command of H.M.S. Cruiser in the Mediterranean.

On 21 May 1898, Senior Officer, Malta sent a telegram that Commander Bell was in hospital with a "hopless case of mental derangement." On the 25th, he was invalided for insanity "arising from constitutioned causes & mantal strain" beyond his own control. He was admitted to Yarmouth Hospital in June "suffering from acute mania." Bell was placed on the Retired List as unfit with the rank of Captain on 16 July, 1898. On 8 September, he was discharged to the care of his brother.
