Vice-Admiral (retired) Lewis Gonne Eyre Crabbe, C.B., C.I.E., C.B.E., D.S.O. (19 January, 1882 – 2 July, 1951) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Crabbe was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1903.[1]

Crabbe was appointed in command of the destroyer Flying Fish on 30 September, 1903.[2]

Crabbe was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 September, 1911.

He was appointed in command of the destroyer leader Hardy on 27 August, 1913.[3]

Great War

Crabbe was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1915.

Crabbe commanded the destroyer Ophelia of Fourth Destroyer Flotilla at the Battle of Jutland.[4]

Post-War

Crabbe was appointed in command of the flotilla leader Saumarez on 1 January, 1919.[5]

He was appointed in command of the flotilla leader Montrose on 4 July, 1919.[6]

Crabbe was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1922.

Crabbe was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 28 February, 1934.

Crabbe was granted permission to wear the U.S. Navy Cross, which he was awarded in recognition of his services to assist the survivors of the American gunboat Panay when she was sunk in the Yangtze River by Japanese air attack in December, 1937.

Crabbe was posthumously promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 5 November, 1957.
