Vice-Admiral (retired) Lewis Gonne Eyre Crabbe, C.B., C.I.E., C.B.E., D.S.O. (19 January, 1882 – 2 July, 1951) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Crabbe was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1903.[1]

Crabbe was appointed in command of the destroyer Flying Fish on 30 September, 1903.[2]

Crabbe was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 September, 1911.[3]

He was appointed in command of the destroyer Hardy on 27 August, 1913.[4]

Great War

Crabbe was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1915.[5]

Crabbe commanded the destroyer Ophelia of Fourth Destroyer Flotilla at the Battle of Jutland.[6]

Post-War

Crabbe was appointed in command of the flotilla leader Saumarez on 1 January, 1919.[7]

He was appointed in command of the flotilla leader Montrose on 4 July, 1919.[8]

Crabbe was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1922.[9]

Crabbe served as Senior Naval Officer, Persian Gulf, first in command of the old hired yacht Triad and then, from March, 1933, in command of the sloop Shoreham. He was superseded in his role in the Persian Gulf in April, 1933.[10]

Crabbe was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 28 February, 1934.[11]

Crabbe was granted permission to wear the U.S. Navy Cross, which he was awarded in recognition of his services to assist the survivors of the American gunboat Panay when she was sunk in the Yangtze River by Japanese air attack in December, 1937.

Crabbe was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 5 November, 1937. After a stint as Acting Commander-in-Chief, China in lieu of the ailing Sir Charles James Colebrooke Little, Crabbe was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 17 June, 1938 and in October was appointed Naval Officer in Charge, Liverpool.

World War II

Crabbe spent two years at Liverpool, his title being altered to Flag Officer in Charge at some point before he was reverted to the Retired List on 15 December, 1940. On 28 July, 1941, he was appointed to the Liverpool Convoy Pool as Commodore, Second Class R.N.R.. He served in convoy operations until being dispersed in July 1945 and eventually reverted to the Retired List on 14 August, 1945.[12]
