Captain John Roderick Segrave, C.B. (8 November, 1871 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Segrave's father was W. F. Segrave, Esquire, who worked, perhaps, as the British Consul in Nantes, France. John Segrave himself spoke French and German and gained eight months' time on passing out of Britannia in December, 1886.

Segrave was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1893.[1]

He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1904.[2]

He worked at the Naval Intelligence Division for three years, starting in February, 1905, leaving to take command of the Philomel on 1 February, 1908. He would remain in her until being superseded on 3 June, 1909 to attend to private affairs.[3]

Segrave was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1911.[4]

At the outset of the war, he was appointed in command of the armed merchant cruiser Teutonic, but this was apparently cancelled in favour of Orama.

He was appointed in command of the armoured cruiser Bacchante on 28 November 1915, remaining with her until the following February when he was made Captain of Lancaster.

Segrave was landed at Valparaiso from Lancaster on 6 May 1917 to be treated for gastritis.

Segrave was appointed to President additional for service at the Admiralty as President of the Small Crafts Committee on 11 February, 1918.[5]

He was appointed command of the battleship Neptune on 15 October, 1918.[6]
