Captain John Montagu Howson, C.B.E. (1 June, 1893 – 19 March, 1959) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
By the time Howson joined the Navy, his father, as assistant schoolmaster at Harrow, was deceased.
He emerged from the Training Establishment on 15 May 1911 and served in the battleship Lord Nelson for seven months, then the armoured cruiser Drake for three, and then the battleship Conqueror for nine.
During the Great War, he served in the heavy cruiser Devonshire until 10 November 1914 when he was sent to join the destroyer Milne.
He was promoted in this ship to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 December, 1915 and left to be in the destroyer Recruit in March 1917. He survived her loss to mining in the North Sea on 9 August, 1917, but was admitted to Shotley sick quarters to recover from shock and immersion.
Howson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 December, 1923.
Howson was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1928.
Howson was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1936. In July 1937 he was treated as Haslar for a back strain but was released the same day.
World War II
Placed on the Retired List on 2 January, 1946.
