John Michael Barker

Commander (retired) John Michael Barker, R.N. (29 September, 1879 – 24 February, 1942) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Samuel Barker, Barrister at Law was born in Christchurch.

Barker was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 26 June, 1902.

Barker was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 26 June, 1910.

He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 30 June, 1912. In October, he was granted permission to apply for employment in the Colonial Service, and he became an Assistant District Commissioner in Somaliland.

In January 1916 he commenced work with the Downs Boarding Flotilla, though his precise details here are illegible. In July 1917, he suffered a punctured eardrum. Barker's appointment with the Boarding Flotilla ended with a bout of catarrh. He reverted to the Retired List as physically unfit on 12 December 1917.

In recognition of his wartime service Barker was granted the War Service rank of Commander with seniority of 11 November, 1918.
