Admiral John Locke Marx, C.B., M.V.O., D.S.O., Royal Navy, Retired (23 April, 1852 – 16 September, 1939) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Early Life & Career

Marx was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with seniority of 22 December, 1874.[1]

Marx was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1895, aged forty three years, two months, and seven days.[2]

He was appointed command of the armoured cruiser Hogue on 19 November, 1902.[3]

On the occasion of the King's visit to Ireland Marx was appointed a Member of the Fourth Class of the Royal Victorian Order (M.V.O.) on 11 August, 1903.[4]

He served as captain of battleship Mars from October 1904. A very unsatisfactory inspection of her in May of 1905 showed her machinery and engine rooms in sad condition. The ship's performance in the heavy gunlayer tests of that year were also noted as being "very unsatisfactory." Marx was superseded in command in October, 1905.[5]

He was appointed a Naval Aide-de-Camp to the King dated 2 March, 1905, vice Egerton.[6]

Marx commissioned the new battleship Dominion on 17 August 1905.[7]

Marx was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral dated 8 March, 1906[8] and ceased his work as Aide de Camp that same day. He arrived home on 2 April.[9]

In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, he was placed on the Retired List dated 8 September, 1909.[10]

Marx was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 22 July, 1910,[11] and to Admiral on 4 June, 1913.[12]

Great War

On 12 October, 1914, Marx was granted a temporary Commission as Commander in the Royal Naval Reserve.[13]

He was appointed in command of the armed yacht Agatha on 17 November, 1914.[14] On 24 June, 1915, he was placed in Iolanda as a temporary Captain R.N.R.. He was superseded in her on 2 May, 1916. He was placed in command of H.M.S. Q13 which was still being readied for service on 20 August. It was perhaps in her that he injured his ribs on 6 November, 1916, necessitating that he be put ashore in Falmouth for about two weeks in a nursing home. Q13 was renamed H.M.S. Aubrietia on 1 May, 1917.[15]

Marx attacked a submarine on 12 January, 1917. Though a conclusive sinking did not result, in recognition of the great credit due him for his attack, on the occasion of the King's birthday he was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 4 June, 1917.[16]

A second submarine action came on 7 July, 1917, for which he was gazetted on 2 November, 1917. Marx was superseded in Aubrietia on 24 September and, on 1 December, 1917, appointed in command of the commissioned escort ship Bayano.[17]
