Commander (retired) John Graham Crossley, (17 January, 1895 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Charles W. Crossley, Esq., manufacturer.

Crossley served in the battleship King Edward VII in the Third Battle Squadron from 15 September 1912 to 22 April, 1915. He then served in T.B. 35 through 15 October when he moved to the destroyer Maenad before transferring to Larne.[1]

In the first half of 1916 he served in the Acorn Class destroyer Nereide. On 7 July he was appointed to the Peregrine. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 December, 1916 while in this ship, and left on 4 April, 1918 when he was appointed to the new "V" Class destroyer Vidette, which was still being completed.[2]

The war over, Crossley continued to serve in Vidette until 11 January, 1920. He presently joined Valerian and became her first officer upon her commissioning.[3]

Crossley next served in the destroyer Warwick from 14 May 1923 to 13 January, 1925, being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 December, 1924.[4]

A Court of Enquiry held on 25 October, 1929 concluded that Crossley showed a lack of good judgment in a collision between his Somme and the destroyer Stormcloud.[5]

Crossley damaged the propellers of Tempest in 1931 due to an error in judgment.[6]

Crossley was promoted to the rank of Commander on 17 January, 1934.[7]
