Commander (retired) John Ernest Phayre, R.N. (14 May, 1892 – 23 November, 1953) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Lieutenant Colonel R. Phayre, retired, John Phayre entered the Navy through the Training Establishment, passing out on 15 May, 1909 and being appointed to the pre-dreadnought battleship Britannia. He spent sixteen months in her before being appointed briefly in Patrol, Invincible, Defence and Indomitable before finally being sent back to Invincible on 14 November, 1911.[1]

Phayre was appointed to Goshawk as Acting Sub-Lieutenant on 18 June, 1912. In January, 1914 he was sent to join the light cruiser Weymouth, leaving her when he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 September, 1914.[2]

Phayre was appointed in command of the destroyer Teviot on 3 October, 1917. Curiously, his service record identifies the ship as Terror, but this is contradicted by Navy Lists and by the service record of Charles William Bruton.

Phayre was appointed in command of the destroyer Mischief on 10 August, 1918.[3]

Post-War

An appointment in command of Tumult in late November, 1922[4] was cancelled in favour of Tomahawk.[5]

Phayre was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 September, 1922.[6]

Phayre was placed on the Retired List as medically unfit with the rank of Commander on 20 December, 1933.[7]

World War II

Phayre was mobilised on 28 September, 1938. In 1940, he fell ill and was admitted to Haslar to investigate myocarditis. He was placed on the Retired List on 12 October.[8]
