Commander (retired) James Richard Maitland Makgill Crichton (5 June, 1885 – 1 December, 1943) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Another man named of only a few weeks difference in age, Henry James Maitland Makgill Crichton, also served. He was perhaps a cousin?

Life & Career

The son of A. M. M. Crichton, who worked with the Civil Service in London as an exchequer.

Crichton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1908.[1]

Crichton served in the battleship Commonwealth from September 1913 until he was appointed to Barham on 29 June, 1915.

Crichton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 April, 1916 before fighting at the Battle of Jutland in Barham as part of the Fifth Battle Squadron. He left her when he was appointed in command of the destroyer Martial on 24 June, 1918.[2]

Crichton stayed with Martial until being appointed in command of the destroyer Torrid on 28 January, 1920.[3]

Crichton was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Commander on 5 June, 1927 and granted permission to proceed abroad.
