Commander (retired) James Hartley Dathan, R.N. (12 October, 1874 – 17 December, 1941) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Dathan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with seniority of 30 June, 1896.

Dathan was appointed to the battleship Montagu as Lieutenant (N) on 18 July, 1905.

Dathan was tried by a Court Martial in the aftermath of the 30 May 1906 wreck of Montagu. He was sentenced to be severely reprimanded and to lose two years' seniority.

Dathan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1906. He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 22 July, 1906.[Fact Check]

Dathan was promoted to the rank of Commander on 12 December (or October?) 1914.

In November 1915, he was appointed as Salvage Officer at the Admiralty.
