Italy played an important role in the Great War, especially as the nation provided a natural choke-point to contain the Austro-Hungarian Navy in the Adriatic Sea.

Her own navy, the Regia Marina as well as those of France and Britain maintained formations of ships to assist in this mission, often based at Brindisi.
