The Inspecting Captain of Mechanical Training Establishments was generally but not always also the captain of H.M.S. Indus, a mechanics' training establishment situated in Devonport.
It operated from 1906 to 1922, and encompassed a number of changing hulk vessels. The final H.M.S. Indus was the former Defence of 6,270 tons, which paid off for the final time on 15 August, 1922.[1] Training for Engineer Artificer Apprentices was thereafter consolidated at Portsmouth.[2]
