Lieutenant Ingleby Stuart Jefferson, R.N. (7 January, 1893 – 21 July, 1917) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Jefferson passed out of the Training Establishment with one month's time and was appointed to Shannon of the Second Cruiser Squadron for one year from 15 May, 1910.[1]

Jefferson served in Orion from mid 1913 before being assigned to T.B. 36 in August, 1914. In mid October he left the torpedo boat due to illness. After some time in Queensferry Hospital, he was appointed to Forth for training in submarines on 3 November, 1914.[2]

Jefferson saved a soldier who had fallen into the Dock at Immingham on 12 January, 1915. He was awarded the Royal Humane Society's Bronze Medal and certificate.[3]

Jefferson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 January, 1915. On 18 February, he left Forth and was appointed to join A 5.[4]

General service in submarines tender to Dolphin commenced from 22 September, 1915, but in November he was assigned to E 43. Jefferson was finally given his own command when he was appointed to C 34 in March, 1917.[5]

This was an unfortunate assignment, as Jefferson died when C 34 was torpedoed by U 52, on 21 July, 1917.[6]
