Captain R.N.R. (retired) Hugh Norman McGill, R.D. (29 June, 1883 – ) was an officer in the Royal Naval Reserve.

Life & Career

McGill was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 18 March, 1914.[1]

After serving in the armed merchant cruiser Teutonic, McGill was appointed to the battleship Canada from 10 August, 1915 to 6 December, 1916. He would see action in her at the Battle of Jutland and be noted as "a good 6" Battery Officer."[2]

McGill was appointed in command of the destroyer Seal on 8 November, 1917.[3]

McGill would suffer one adverse report in 1918 for a collision, but would be commended for his role in saving life in the wake of UB 123's sinking, on 10 October, of S.S. "Leinster", although over 500 lives would be lost. He commanded Seal until he was demobilised on 25 January, 1919.[4]

McGill was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. on 18 March, 1922.[5]

McGill was promoted to the rank of Commander R.N.R. on 30 June, 1927.[6]

McGill was placed on the Retired List at the rank of Captain R.N.R. on 29 June, 1933.[7]

In 1948, he reported himself as being retired in Liverpool and being unfit for service on account of his age.[8]
