Commander (retired) Horatio Victor Muriel McHardy, (2 January, 1885 – 18 February, 1945) served in the Royal Navy. He seems to have possessed a very frail psyche which prevented useful service.

Life & Career

Born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, McHardy listed his mother as his guardian upon joining the Navy in January, 1900.

Mchardy was reported on 3 August 1906 to have suffered a mental breakdown, according to a doctor's certificate.[1]

McHardy was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on April, 1907.[2]

On 21 July 1911 he was reported absent without leave. Further information revealed that he was sick ashore, suffering from a nervous breakdown. After a series of evaluations and some time in the Osborne Home, McHardy was placed on the Retired List as unfit on 25 April, 1912. They tried to bring him back upon the outbreak of war, but on 9 September 1914 declared that he was unfit for service due to neurasthenia.[3]

McHardy was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on April, 1915.[4]

McHardy was promoted to the rank of Commander on 2 January, 1925.[5]
