Rear-Admiral (retired) Herbert Neville Garnett, C.M.G., R.N. (5 August, 1875 – ) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War.

Life & Career

Born in Easton, Norwich as the son of Colonel F. Garnett, Garnett was a fluent French speaker.

Garnett was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1896.[1]

He was awarded the Ryder Memorial Prize for 1896 for placing highest in the examination in French at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich.

Garnett was promoted to the rank of Commander on 1 January, 1907.[2]

On 12 December, 1911, he was admitted to Haslar Hospital with burns. He was found fit on 4 January, 1912.[3]

Garnett was appointed in command of the scout cruiser Foresight on 14 June, 1912. When she collided with Falcon in January, 1914, Garnett was found partly to blame.[4]

Great War

Garnett was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1914.[5]

Garnett was placed in command of the monitor H.M.S. Roberts in May 1915.

Garnett was mentioned in despatches for services in Gallipoli, gazetted 14 March, 1916.[6]

In June 1916, he relieved Henry Tritton Buller in command of the second class protected cruiser Highflyer.

On 19 September 1917, Highflyer collided with a steamship. Garnett was told to be more careful in future.[7]

In January, 1918, Garnett was made Assistant Director of Mines.[8]

Garnett was awarded a C.M.G. for mining services and his services in the wake of the Halifax Disaster, gazetted 3 June, 1918.[9]

Post-war

On 15 January, 1921, Garnett left his post as Assistant Director of Mines and was appointed in command of the armoured cruiser Carnarvon.[10]

Garnett was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 31 March, 1923.

Garnett was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral in September, 1924.[11]
